Barrington Stage Company, Route 7 in Sheffield presents staged readings of the new musical "The Mistress Cycle" on Thursday, August 22 at 8 p.m.; and Friday, August 23 at 2 p.m. A sung-through musical, "The Mistress Cycle" is the story of Tess, a young Manhattanite who is contemplating becoming "the other woman" to an older man; as she weighs her options she is visited by several mistresses from throughout history, including writer Anaïs Nin and Diane de Poitiers, mistress to King Henri II of France. Thomaston Opera House, 158 Main St. in Thomaston holds OPEN AUDITIONS for its October production of "Ancestral Voices: A Family Story" on Wednesday and Thursday, September 11-12 from 7-9 p.m. This magical play by A.R. Gurney is staged as a concert work, with the actors reading from their scripts while seated on a bare stage. Five performers play members of a rich WASP family in Buffalo, NY between 1935 to 1942, with a brief coda from the 1960s. The play unites the microcosm of a family to the macrocosm of America at war, and is also an elegy for the city of Buffalo. All roles are open to audition; director Amber Lynn Dunphy is seeking one male actor (age 20-mid 30s), one male and one female actor (mid 40s-mid 50s), and one mature (60s or older) female actor. Simons Rock College in Great Barrington presents TIBET, OCCUPATION AND EXILE, a photographic exhibit by Mary Gendler from August 26 through October 4 in the Alumni Library Atrium. The exhibit documents Ms. Gendlers trip to Tibet and several visits to Dharamsala, India, where for the past seven years she and her husband have been working with the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan community to help them develop new skills in nonviolent resistance. The exhibit includes landscapes and portraits from central Tibet showing the people, mountains and countryside, as well as the splendor of the few remaining monasteries that have been rebuilt by the Tibetans in recent years. Also included are photographs of the Tibetan community in exile. An opening reception on Tuesday, August 27 from 5-7 p.m. will include a talk at 6 p.m. by Ms. Gendler about her work. The Mount, 2 Plunkett St. in Lenox offers visitors to Edith Whartons newly restored house and gardens the opportunity to join senior guide Leah Chamberlain for a talk on the re-creation of the homes unique GRASS STEPS on Thursdays, August 22 and August 29 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. One hundred years ago Edith Wharton designed garden steps made of grass to create a unique and beautiful path through her terraced rock garden to her cherished flower garden below. This month a landscape restoration team expects to put the finishing touches on the steps, which have been rebuilt using modern materials and techniques. Friends of the Beckley Furnace and the Upper Housatonic Valley Heritage Area offer a scenic walk to bring the AGE OF IRON to life on Saturday, August 24 at 10 a.m. The 1.2-mile walk will begin at the East Canaan Congregational Church and features local historians at several points on the route to provide colorful background and answer questions. Included will be a visit to the Beckley Iron Furnace, which produced iron from 1847-1919. Requested donation is $5, which will be used for further restoration of the Furnace and to support the effort to have the region named a "National Heritage Area." New Marlborough Cultural Council sponsors the 18th annual ELIHU BURRITT DAY on Saturday, August 24 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on the Town Green, Route 57 in New Marlborough. This years fair will focus on quilts, with quilt exhibits, appraisals and demonstrations. Visitors will be able to stitch a few themselves, and see the differences between old and new quilting techniques. The Great Barrington Quilters Guild will be demonstrating and discussing quilting, fabric selection and quilt design, both traditional and contemporary. Also featured will be Jim Weber with his band of merry musicians performing from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., an outstanding collection of white elephants for sale, a book sale, home baked goods for sale, a childrens art exhibition and workshop, and a traditional country fair barbecue by the New Marlborough Volunteer Fire Dept.

Oliver Wolcott Sr. Branch, Sons of the American Revolution sponsor a TRIBUTE TO WINCHESTER'S REVOLUTIONARY WAR PATRIOTS on Saturday, August 24 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on the Green (Route 263 & Newfield Rd.) in Winchester Center. Participating in the event will be Gen. Wolcott's 6th Brigade; Col. Huntington's Regiment; Charles Merriman Society, Children of the American Revolution; Gen. Norfolk Library, Route 44 in Norfolk hosts its annual BOOK FAIR on Saturday, August 24 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. This year there are an unusual number of interesting and valuable books. Sponsored by the Norfolk Library Associates; proceeds benefit the library.

Foothills Adult and Continuing Education offers a trip to the PUMPKIN FESTIVAL in Keene, NH on Saturday, October 26; bus leaves the Education Connection on Route 63 in Litchfield at 10:15 a.m. and returns at 10 p.m. There will be over 16,000 hand carved and decorated pumpkins of all sizes everywhere, including bleacher stands with rows and rows of pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns. Many charming shops line Main Street, vendors will join the festival, and there is a band shell where there will be live entertainment. East (Route 44) in Norfolk presents a benefit BIBLIOTHEQUE BINGO PARTY on Friday, August 23; refreshments begin at 5 p.m., with bingo from 6-8 p.m. Prizes include donations from local merchants, trips to family vacation homes, gift certificates and more. Greater Torrington Team for the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk holds a final fundraiser, DANCE UNDER THE STARS, on Friday, August 23 at 7 p.m. at Elk's Pond, Guerdat Rd. in Torrington; gates open at 6:30 p.m. Entertainment is by the Ken Reder Experience. Five local residents are participating in the October 11-13 walk in New York and have set a goal of raising $10,000 for this worthwhile cause. Admission is $20 per person, $35 per couple. Riverton Fire Company sponsors a MULTIPLE SAFETY DEMONSTRATION on Saturday, August 24 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at White Pines Campsites, 232 Old North Rd. in Barkhamsted. Participating organizations also include Barkhamsted East Fire Dept., Pleasant Valley Fire Dept., West Hartland Fire Dept., Colebrook Fire Dept., New Hartford Fire Dept., New Hartford Ambulance, Winsted Fire Dept., Winsted Ambulance, Torrington Fire Dept., CT State Police, LifeStar, and Campion Medical. The public is invited; everyone attending will be provided safety knowledge that is beneficial to all ages. The State Police will offer a K9 demonstration, and will display the Convincer, a roll-over simulator, Troop 1 aircraft, and D.A.R.E. Car (for child ID and fingerprinting). The fire and ambulance departments will demonstrate water rescue, vehicle extrication (Jaws of Life), wildfire techniques, a simulated smoke house, structure search and rescue, and the LifeStar helicopter.
