Project Crossroads at NCCC
Northwestern CT Community College in Winsted offers Projects Crossroads, a program for those who will benefit from English as a Second Language instruction, Basic Skills work, and General Education Diploma preparation.
English as a Second Language instruction is a conversation-based introduction to English that moves into graduated levels of vocabulary, sentence structure and survival math as the student develops proficiency in the language. General Education Diploma preparation provides tutoring and computer-based individualized instruction in the areas of writing skills, science, math, social studies and literature. Basic Skills work consists of individualized instruction in writing, reading and survival math, organized according to the needs of the student.
Project Crossroads is administered by the Academic Skills Center, and is designed around students’ individual needs. Participants attend the program for 20 hours per week for 15 weeks. They work with teachers and tutors, and reinforce their skills by using a computer program for individualized instruction.
There are two modules planned for the 2002-03 academic year: September 3 through December 5; and January 13 through April 18. Enrollees must attend 75% of one full module, and may be recommended to remain in the program for more than one module. If the number of participants in the program allows, admission may take place on a rolling basis.
Project Crossroads, which is funded under the Federal Workforce Investment Act, is free to qualified participants. For more info call Academic Skills Coordinator Denise Linden at 860-738-6351.
