Stepping Stones in Diabetes Management

Nurse and certified diabetes educator Anne Hummel will present a program on "Stepping Stones in Diabetes Management" at Noble Horizons in Salisbury on Thursday, September 12 at 11 a.m. People with diabetes, their friends and family, or professionals who care for them are welcome to attend this free educational program where materials, product samples and refreshments will be available. The methods, tools and life style changes required to manage diabetes throughout the stages of this disease will be discussed. This program will also be beneficial for anyone at risk for developing diabetes. Life style changes made now may prevent the development of diabetes.

Diabetes is a disease which progresses through stages from prediabetes to diabetes and finally may include complications from diabetes. The Diabetes Prevention Program, a recent large research study, proved that diabetes can be prevented in 58% of the individuals at high risk for developing diabetes; these high-risk individuals had a family history of diabetes and were obese. During three years in the study they lost 15 pounds and exercised 30 minutes daily, and these life style changes made the difference.

Previous large clinical studies have proved that life style changes, tools, techniques and medications can help type 1 and type 2 diabetics control their blood sugars at nearly normal levels, which will prevent the complications long associated with diabetes.

The information available at this program will help the participants make decisions and take actions that will maintain and preserve their health and quality of life. For more info or directions, call Anne Hummel at 860-672-2325, or Kathy Bartles of Noble Horizons at 860-435-9851.
