During the week of August 19-23 the Connecticut State Police Explorer Post #488 held their second academy training class at Oliver Wolcott Technical School in Torrington. Throughout the week 15 new Explorer recruits participated in daily physical training and academic courses such as criminal investigation and accident reconstruction. On Thursday and Friday all 15 recruits achieved certification in adult, child and infant CPR, as well as first aid certification. During the week troopers from Troop B came in to share their experiences, and also taught such classes as radio and communication skills, firearms safety, and scene safety. Physical training was led by troopers as well as sergeants from the United States Marine Corps.
On Wednesday, a special visitor greeted us. Trooper Chris Sorrell and his K-9 partner Buddy gave a 20-minute demonstration on the keen senses and agility of the K-9 team. From 30 feet away Buddy was able to track and locate a nickel that was thrown in thick grass by Sorrell. Buddy was later praised and awarded with his favorite tennis ball.
This exciting week-long event, which is held biannually, brings together people who in most cases are complete strangers, and bonds them as a team. When graduation comes the Explorers have a sense of pride in themselves that is indescribable, knowing that they have completed a week-long training session that was both physically and mentally demanding.
