Adult Classes at Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts

Ever since the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts moved into the Learning Corridor two years ago, adult visitors have been asking, "When are you going to have some classes for us?" The answer is: "Now!"

Beginning in mid-September, Academy After Hours will offer classes to adults in acting, dance, writing, creativity and music. "It's a pilot program," says Dr. Herb Sheppard, GHAA director. "We’ve got these stunning facilities and an arts faculty without parallel. We can offer ways for people to enrich their lives that are unique. In our day program for high school students, we have kids from 46 cities and towns. We hope to have a similar mix of adults in our evening program. City buses stop outside our door, and we hope that folks who work in Hartford will stay in town and those who don’t will want to come. We have plenty of free, secure parking and we're less than ten minutes from all the major highways. Those may seem like small considerations, but they are the reasons people give for not coming into Hartford at night."

Every member of the Academy’s faculty is an artist and a teacher. Class offerings during the fall pilot program include: Beginning Acting taught by theater department head Jonathan Gillman; Creative Impulse and the Arts with Tom Schuttenhelm; Environmentally Friendly Printmaking with Ann Baldwin; Introduction to 35mm B/W Darkroom Photography with Christine Breslin; Introduction to Tap Dancing with Clare O'Donnell; Narrative Writing with Dawn Howe; Opera Here, This Season with Sarah Hersh; Poetry Workshop: Preparing for the Long Haul with Pit Menousek Pinegar; Reading Poetry to Write Poetry with Joan Malerba-Foran; and The World of Children's Books with Iris Van Rynbach.
