Northwest Amateur Boxing Celebrates Milestone
The coaching staff at Northwest Amateur Boxing proudly announces that August 18 served as the six-month mark for the operation of the nonprofit club, which is located at 45 Water St. in downtown Torrington. Executive Coordinator Dianne Collins, who keeps track of such things, stated that club membership has swelled to over sixty youngsters, with the average daily attendance reaching nearly twenty. The 2,000 square foot gym bustles with activity from 5-7 p.m. weekdays with youngsters ages 8 to 17, both boys and girls. Instruction and the use of equipment remain free for Litchfield County youth, with only a minimum expense for insurance (through United States Amateur Boxing) and some personal gear (handwraps and mouthguard) totaling less than $40.
The response by area youngsters has surpassed any estimates made by the directors and volunteer staff, and points to the need for such an after-school program for area youth. While this is good news for the club, there is a downside as well. The heavy use has put a strain on space at the club as well as accelerated the wear and tear on equipment. This, in addition to the fact that the club has yet to find a site that is rent-free, has made it necessary to put on another fundraising amateur boxing show locally.
Therefore, we take this opportunity to announce Torrington High School as the site of Connecticut Showcase III on Saturday, October 19, with the program starting at 7 p.m. This event will feature Torrington area boxers as well as boxers from the state’s other boxing clubs. As before, this event promises to be an action-packed family show with boxers from age 8 to 30 participating in a dozen or so matches. United States Amateur Boxing officials will be in charge of judging and refereeing the bouts, as always.
To help defray some of the costs incurred in putting on this event, it is hoped that area businesses and companies will respond to our call for sponsorships. Anyone willing to help in this regard may call George Sigiel at 860-567-8902 for more info.
The general public can also help by supporting the club and attending the show. Those who came to our last event in April will tell you that it was a terrific show. Tickets are reasonably priced at $10 for adults and $5 for students, and will be available at local sporting goods shops as well as at the club itself on weekdays from 5-8:30 p.m. There will also be food available at the event; we hope to see you there.
