Nora’s Day in Great Barrington
Berkshire County businesses, individuals, craftsmen and performers are massing their efforts to produce a Breast Cancer Prevention and Treatment benefit—Nora's Day—on Saturday, September 21 from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. at Butternut Basin, Route 23 in Great Barrington. All proceeds will benefit the Project H.E.R.O.A. (Health, Education, Resources, Outreach, Advocacy) community outreach program, which provides free mammograms, pap smears and other related breast and cervical diagnostic services to uninsured and under-insured women in Berkshire County. Founded by cancer survivors, Project H.E.R.O.A. is dedicated to saving lives by providing these early detection screening and diagnostic procedures.
Dedicated by her friends to the memory of Annora Leffingwell Stanton, a 48-year-old mother of three who lost her battle with breast cancer two years ago, Nora's Day will include food, family entertainment, a raffle, and performances by local musicians. The event will culminate with a candlelight vigil in loving memory of Annora, other victims and survivors, and their families who struggle with the effects of this devastating disease.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer deaths for all women, and the leading cause of death in women between the ages of 40 and 55. One out of eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer is newly diagnosed every three minutes, and a woman will die from breast cancer every thirteen minutes. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and 40,000 will die from this disease.
Well known artist Donny Sander, Berkshire County’s newest high-energy rock sensation, D.N.A., and a reunion of the 1990s classic rock band, Mid-Life Crisis, are only a few of the musical participants who will appear during this daylong benefit. There will be a raffle featuring donated goods and services by local business people and individuals, as well as booths featuring local food fare, such as Hudson's Restaurant. Children's events will include performances by David Grover and Bowie the Clown.
Advance sale tickets are available for $15 at Domaney’s Liquors, The Music Store, and Michele's Hair Salon in Great Barrington. Tickets will also be available for $20 on the day of the event.
Donations of funds, foods and services are welcomed; checks may be made payable to: Project H.E.R.O.A., PO Box 3569, Pittsfield, MA 01202. For more info or to volunteer services or items, call Noreen Johnson at 413-229-2280.
Not a family in Berkshire County will be untouched at some point by the devastating effects of women's reproductive cancer. Through Nora's Day, the community can join hands, celebrate and preserve life in a uniquely exciting and delightful day and evening for young and old alike.
