Free Prostate Screenings in Torrington and Winsted

Charlotte Hungerford Hospital is offering men age 50 and older free prostate cancer screenings on Monday, September 23 from 6-9 p.m. at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington; and on Wednesday, September 25 from 6-9 p.m. at the Winsted Health Center in Winsted.

Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in American men and is expected to claim 30,000 lives in 2002. In addition, at least 184,000 new cases of the disease will be diagnosed this year alone. The good news is that with an increase in awareness and screening, the survival rate has increased to more than 90%. The best way to beat prostate cancer is by detecting it in its earliest stage. Men over the age of 50, those who are at high risk for the disease through a family history, and African-American men over 40 years of age should be screened for prostate cancer annually.

Screenings include a physical digital exam and blood test. To schedule a free screening, call 860-489-1468 from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., or 860-496-6513 before or after hours. Pre-registration is required.
