Opportunities in Girl Scouting
Girl Scouting is exploring nature, careers, science and math; singing, acting, painting and drawing; swimming, basketball, archery and hiking; camping, cooking, building and creating; making new friends, providing community service, traveling and accepting challenges; learning about oneself and the world. The Girl Scout mission is to "… inspire girls with the highest ideals of character, conduct, patriotism and service that they may become happy and resourceful citizens."
Who are Girl Scouts? Daisy Girl Scouts are in grades K-1 or 5-6 years old, and learn by doing and participating in activities planned by the leaders and parents. Brownie Girl Scouts are in grades 1-3 or 6-8 years old, and learn as they try new activities, planning their activities with their leaders. Junior Girl Scouts are in grades 3-6 or 8-11 years old, and work in patrols with adult guidance, learning as they plan their activities. Junior Girl Scouts become stronger individuals as they explore the world with their troop. Cadette Girl Scouts are in grades 6-9 or 11-14 years old, and are beginning to explore personal interests and possible career paths. Cadette Girl Scouts learn life skills as they build positive relationships with family and friends and expand leadership skills. Senior Girl Scouts are in grades 9-12 or 14-17 years old, and work on individual interests and skills independently or in troops. Senior Girl Scouts travel, teach, and use their leadership skills.
Adult Girl Scouts are women and men age 18 and older who are willing to share their talents and interests with girls and other adults.
Girls are welcome to join Girl Scouting at any level, regardless of past Girl Scouting experience. All Girl Scouts must make the Girl Scout Promise and accept the Girl Scout Law, and pay the annual membership fee of $7. Girls will receive their invitations to join from their school. For more info call the Girl Scout Council of Northwestern CT at 860-482-4495. Join us as we celebrate the 90th year of an organization where all girls may grow strong in a safe, supportive environment.
