Northwestern Teachers Promoting Democracy
By Susan Day and Carmella Lattizori

Ms. Day and Ms, Lattizori are Registrars of Voters for the Town of Barkhamsted.

We were pleased to learn that Northwestern Regional High School intends to participate in the "Freedom to Vote" program that is sponsored by the Secretary of State’s office. This initiative is being carried out at Northwestern by two members of the Social Studies Department. We are fortunate to have teachers such as Bill Sullivan and Frank Rodenberg who are willing to promote democracy as part of their teaching practice. As Lyndon B. Johnson as aptly said, "Voting is our first duty in a democracy." It is especially relevant during this critical time in our history.

Mr. Sullivan and Mr. Rodenberg have indicated that a number of their students will join in the "Take 10" challenge by encouraging ten adults to vote in the November election. This is sure to have a positive impact on voter turnout, and we are most appreciative of their efforts.
