Are We Really in Decadence?

By Dario Diorio, Torrington

While watching on TV the very sad commemoration of the tragedy of September 11, with deep regret and disappointment I noticed that the people who were reading the names of the innocent victims did not read the names of all who perished during the cruel attack. The names were listed alphabetically on the screen of the TV, but I would like to know how the families and friends of those who died unjustly felt when they did not hear their names called during the ceremony.

Are we really in decadence? Every day I notice serious mistakes made in all spectrums of life. I know that it is "human error," but could we try to minimize the innumerable errors made in our society? Many people of the world have access to our news on TV, so how can we gain the respect of those nations and convince them to practice the correct behavior that we try repeatedly to propagate in other parts of the world?

I have not seen comments written in any newspaper about this great injustice. I know that some people like to read mostly about the Little League, fundraising, traffic violations, accidents, breach of peace, divorces, etc., but I firmly believe that the primary obligation of the media is not only to mention injustices but also to inform people on all issues which affect our society.

If my comments seem to be critical, I would like to point out that I was born an American citizen, I served honorably in the U.S. Army, and I respect the laws and the Constitution of our great nation, which gives me the right to express my feelings.
