Corporate Rogue Model of Democracy
By John Long, Torrington
The Bush Administration’s idea of democracy follows the corporate rogue model. CEO Bush presents a resolution to attack Iraq and demands that Congress give its rubber stamp approval like a compliant board of directors.
Now is a good time for members of Congress to find their collective backbone and perform their constitutional duty as a counterbalance to Presidential power. Congress should stop formulating vague, open-ended resolutions and do their job: debate and vote on a Declaration of War. If we intend to invade, conquer and take over the governance of Iraq we should start by using the proper name: it is war, not "regime change."
The decision to send our military personnel into battle should not be rushed by election year tactics. Congress has a clearly defined duty, but if members hide from this responsibility, we have the opportunity to replace them in November.
