What Is Friendship?

By Florence Vining Thomen, East Canaan

What is friendship? True friendship is the ultimate in acceptance, total trust, total forgiveness, and always (hopefully) complete understanding of each other's individuality (and acceptance of their idiosyncrasies). A true friend is always dependable, ever willing to be of help or consolation when it is needed, defensive against others who might downgrade that loved one. One must be willing to sacrifice for the other's needs on occasion, and to adjust to his or her unexpected situations.

One must realize that gifts are not always necessary to denote feelings of love, though love is the best and precious gift. But, do realize that even the smallest gift will become a treasured memento.

True friends may be rare acquisitions, but a few real, loving friends can be one's richest possessions. May you be that kind of friend. Again, I am reminded of the song "Nature Boy" in which he said: "The greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return."
