Holcomb Farm Fall Festival

On Saturday, October 5 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Holcomb Farm Learning Center, 113 Simsbury Rd. in West Granby will celebrate its Fall Festival for the 9th consecutive year. This year the focus of the activities and exhibits will be on nature and the environment. For the youngsters, there will be pumpkin painting, face painting, clay pinch pots, cornhusk doll making, a "Wizard's Castle" bouncer, Star Lab's "Native American Skies," storytelling, a chance to "Meet the Reptiles," haystack hunting, and a recycled scarecrow contest. And all ages can enjoy hayrides, guided hikes, and building a boat out of recycled materials to enter our boat race.

Two special features of this year's event will include a hike through Holcomb Farm to the fabulous overlook on the Granby Land Trust's Peterson Preserve, and the unveiling of two new letterboxing locations. Letterboxing is a combination of orienteering and treasure hunting that involves using maps, clues and compasses to find hidden containers.

If you get hungry, "Elements" of Granby will be there to serve up their imaginative sandwiches. Or try some homemade baked goods and Bushy Hill cider while you enjoy the music of HeartsEase. From 2-4 p.m., adults can enjoy a wine garden courtesy of Center Spirit Shop. This will be a wine tasting with hand-painted glasses available for purchase, created by Holcomb Farm artists. Enjoy the ceramic artistry of Avis Cherichetti and Marge Vanderbilt, or the winning entries from the Farm's September art show.

Exhibits by the Granby Land Trust, the Salmon Brook Ecology Center, the Farmington River Watershed, the CT Outdoor and Environmental Education Association, Granby Recycling, and America Recycles will help keep us mindful of our precious environment.

In case of rain, the Festival will be postponed until Sunday, October 6. There will be a parking fee of $4 per car, and there is a $1-$2 charge for some activities, but many are free; all proceeds will be used to support the educational programs at Holcomb Farm Learning Center.
