Grant Received for Children's Labyrinth Walks
Wisdom House in Litchfield recently received a grant from the Waterbury Foundation, providing funding for Children's Labyrinth Walks for young people from area towns. The $4,785 grant will enable children in grades 4-8 to visit Wisdom House's seven-circuit labyrinth, view an introductory video, and discuss their experience with a trained presenter.
The labyrinth is a quiet, meditative walking path that has gained popularity in recent years as a way to promote healing and encourage meditation, breathing exercises and other types of quiet reflection. The labyrinth has its origins in ancient times. Some labyrinths were built into the floors of cathedrals where pilgrims, especially during the dangerous times of the Crusades, could make the journey that symbolized their pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
Poet Sandra Ebner of Litchfield led the first Children's Labyrinth Walk with children from Litchfield Parks and Recreation on August 15. "The labyrinth experience is non-competitive, egalitarian, non-sectarian, inclusive and is a good alternative to the usual competitive activities children are exposed to," Ms. Ebner said.
Over 2,000 people visit the Wisdom House labyrinth each year. The Waterbury Foundation grant will help expose more young people to the experience. Children can visit with their teachers or organization leaders in groups of 15-20 at one time. Schools, youth organizations and clubs within the area served by the Waterbury Foundation are encouraged to contact Wisdom House and arrange for a program.
Wisdom House is an interfaith retreat and conference center for women and men who value seeking and learning in a contemplative environment.
