Attack Iraq?

By George Washington, Barkhamsted

The convoluted logic of liberals never ceases to amaze me. The people who blame President Bush for having foreknowledge of the September 11, 2001 attack on our country and not doing anything to prevent it are the same ones who don't want to go to war with Iraq. How in the world can you blame Bush for not using his power to prevent one attack and condemn him for trying to use his power to prevent another?

For those who think that Saddam Hussein is not a threat, I suggest you do a little research! Hussein has already used weapons of mass destruction. He's used them on his own people. It seems to me that someone who is that determined to stay in power and would put down his own people so ruthlessly wouldn't hesitate in using these same weapons on the "devil" itself—i.e., the United States.

Shortly after the 9/11 attack on the United States, President Bush addressed a joint session of Congress and the American people. During this speech he put forth the Bush doctrine. Essentially it states that if you're not with us, you're against us. Bush declared that the mission to eradicate terrorism from the world was really a struggle of good vs. evil.

Bush stated that the war would be a different kind of war. It would be a war in which the old style of warfare would no longer be effective. The enemy would no longer be allowed to hide and thus be able to attack with surprise. The enemy would be hunted down, caught, brought to justice, or destroyed. Bush told us the war would be long, and our resolve must be steadfast.

Liberal naysayers were convinced that Bush would get us into another "Vietnam" when he began military operations in Afghanistan. Of course liberals knew that Bush was too stupid to be able to back up his determined boasts. But Bush did effectively in Afghanistan what President Nixon eventually tried to do in Vietnam: that is, have the indigenous fighters do the bulk of the fighting with the help of American air support. (By the way, this tactic would have been effective in Vietnam as well, if the politicians weren't so bullied by the "peace at all cost" advocates.)

Many are fooled by the latest ploy of Saddam Hussein. He has agreed to unconditional United Nations inspections of his country. However, there are conditions to his "unconditional" inspections, with many buildings off limits. Well, duh! If you have something to hide and declare that there are places someone can't look, where would you hide whatever it is you want to hide? If there are places inspectors can't inspect, how can the inspections be unconditional?

In the Congressional resolution of September 14, 2001, Congress gave the president wide-ranging powers to pursue those he determined to be responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Bush, along with his military advisors, put into action a plan that drove the Taliban out of power in Afghanistan and sent Al Qaeda into hiding throughout the world. President Bush knows that we cannot break off engaging the enemy of America because of initial victories. We must stay the course. As contrary it may be to our belief system that as a nation we would ever be the aggressor, things have forever changed. Oceans on both sides of our country can no longer protect us. The enemy lives among us. We must continue the fight until those who would bring harm to the United States are stopped, even if it means we depart from our belief that the United States cannot be the aggressor.

I believe the president already has the authority to declare war on Iraq. Bush has both the moral and legal authority to pursue terrorists wherever they may be. Whether we have the backing of the United Nations or not, Bush has the obligation under the Constitution to "preserve, protect and defend" our way of life. To believe we have any other choice is to deny the lessons of history. Depots cannot be appeased, as Neville Chamberlain discovered in his search for peace prior to World War II. Saddam Hussein is evil in human form. He must be stopped. We must not shrink from our responsibility to rid the world of this evil!
