The Woman in Black Haunts Sandisfield
Since its first performance in 1989, The Woman in Black has become one of the great successes of London's West End. More than two million petrified theatergoers have experienced the terrifying spectre of the woman in black, and she's coming to haunt Sandisfield on Saturday, October 26 at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, October 27 at 2 p.m.
The Guardian calls Stephen Mallatratt's adaptation of Susan Hill's book "… a brilliantly effective spine-chiller … the narrative is gripping." The International Herald Tribune concurs: "Really gripping ghost stories on stage are all too few and far between, so all credit to Stephen Mallatratt … There may be better ghost stories around in print, but I can't think of one that has been so carefully developed for the stage …"
Internationally renowned singer and actor Benjamin Luxon returns to the stage of the Sandisfield Arts Center to play Arthur Kipps, a middle-aged solicitor who hires a professional actor, played by Sandisfield stalwart George Preston, to help him tell the story of a horrifying series of events which befell him many years previously with devastatingly tragic results.
Said Preston, "The Woman in Black" promises to frighten the whole family out of its wits, without gratuitous violence, sex or profanity. It's the perfect way to set the mood for Halloween … only don't forget to leave on a light or two before you depart for the theater. You won't want to return to a dark, empty house."
The Sandisfield Arts Center is located on Hammertown Rd. off Route 57 in Sandisfield. It is housed in a historic 1839 Baptist Church that later became an orthodox synagogue and now a thriving arts venue appreciated for its country charm and great acoustics. Tickets for the play are $15; for reservations or more info, call 413-258-3309.
