TORRINGTON: Connecticut Yankee Chorale sponsors an all-you-can-eat Pasta and Polenta Supper with continuous servings from 5-7 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 21 Fern Dr. Scarpelli’s Catering will prepare a meal that includes pasta, polenta, meatballs, tossed salad, rolls and butter, beverage and dessert; take-out dinners will also be available, and there will be door prizes. Tickets are $7 adults, $5 children (under 12), and may be purchased from any member of the Chorale or at the door. AVON: Valley Community Baptist Church, 590 West Avon Rd. (Route 167) presents a dramatized version of "The Sermon on the Mount" performed by storyteller and TV star Frank Runyeon at 7 p.m. Runyeon places the famous sermon in a revealing and dramatic new setting as told by the Apostle Matthew. The very human stories of a livestock merchant, silk trader, seamstress and many others come to life in this powerful and humorous drama. Admission is free; a free-will offering will be received. LITCHFIELD: League of Women Voters of Litchfield County sponsors a 5th District U.S. Representative candidate debate at 7 p.m. at the Connecticut Junior Republic on Route 63 (2.5 miles north of the Litchfield green). Participating will be Republican Nancy Johnson, Democrat Jim Maloney, Joseph Zdonczyk of the Concerned Citizens Party, and Libertarian Walter Gengarelly. Tom Monahan of WVIT channel 30 and Ruth Epstein, editor of the Lakeville Journal, will act as questioners. The public is encouraged to attend; questions will be accepted from the audience. WINSTED: Charter CommunityVision Channel 13 hosts a debate that it will carry live at 8 p.m. between David Cappabianca and George Wilber, candidates for State Representative in the 63rd District. The moderator will be Michael Marciano, editor of the Winsted Journal; viewers may call in with questions which will be presented to the candidates. The 63rd District includes the towns of Winchester, Colebrook, North Canaan, Norfolk, western Barkhamsted, and Hartland. LITCHFIELD: The Forman School, 12 Norfolk Rd. hosts an Open House from 9-11 a.m. in the Johnson Art Center; campus tours with student ambassadors will be available. The Forman School is a private, co-educational college preparatory school (grades 9-12) where children with learning differences can achieve academic excellence. NORFOLK: Norfolk Lions Club holds its Fall Apple Sale from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in front of the Norfolk Pharmacy on Station Place. Deluxe fresh-picked apples, cider, and homemade apple baked goods will be available. Proceeds benefit the Norfolk Lions Club Ambulance and other Lions Club charities.

THOMASTON: Thomaston Methodist Church hosts a Yankee Pot Roast Dinner from 5-7 p.m. Menu includes pot roast, potatoes, carrots, salad, beverage and homemade apple crisp. Cost is $8 adults, $7 seniors, $5 children (12 and under).

TORRINGTON: Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day will be held for the residents of Canaan, Colebrook, Cornwall, Goshen, Hartland, Harwinton, Kent, Litchfield, Morris, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury, Sharon and Torrington at the Torrington Water Pollution Control Plant on Bogue Rd. Items such as oil-based paints and stains, turpentine, pesticides, herbicides, household cleaners, hobby supplies, 20-lb. propane tanks, and fluorescent bulbs will be accepted. Residents may also turn in mercury thermometers and receive a free digital thermometer in exchange. TORRINGTON: First Congregational Church, 835 Riverside Ave. holds an old-fashioned Chicken Pie Supper fundraiser from 4-7 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. CANTON: Focus on Canton sponsors the fall Neighbor Helping Neighbor Day from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. This is a great way to help out your neighbors who are in physical, financial or family need. Come for the day, or merely a few minutes; tasks will be given out individually, and any time you can spend will be greatly appreciated. The day begins at 8:30 a.m. at Canton Baptist Church for coffee and to pick up assignments. TORRINGTON: Catholic Inter-Parish Adult Education Initiative sponsors a presentation on the importance of preparing in advance for making decisions at the end stages of life at 2 p.m. in the St. Peter Church Hall, 109 East Main St. Sr. Suzanne Gross, a Franciscan Sister of the Eucharist and Program Coordinator for the Hartford Archdiocesan Pro-Life Activities, will discuss tools such as living wills, advanced directives, and the use of conservators. People of all faith traditions are welcome; there is no admission charge, and refreshments will be served.

WINSTED: St. Andrew’s Lodge, 27 Wheeler St. holds its Fall Roast Beef Dinner from noon-1:30 p.m. Each year St. Andrew’s awards scholarships to college bound seniors at Gilbert and Regional #7. These scholarships are supported entirely by the proceeds of the roast beef dinners and by donations to the scholarship fund. Come and enjoy a really good dinner and at the same time help a deserving student go to college.
