Richard Whiteford Speaks on Forest Conservation in Norfolk

World-renowned environmental advocate and journalist Richard Whiteford will appear in the "Hall of Flags" at the Botelle School in Norfolk on Saturday, November 2 at 4 p.m. Mr. Whiteford is widely recognized for his expertise, activism and effective leadership in environmental issues. He was nominated for the prestigious United Nations Global 500 Award in Environmental Journalism. Currently, he is the Outreach Coordinator for the Highlands Coalition, which will be the topic of his talk and slide presentation.

The Highlands Coalition is an organization working to promote conservation of the vital forested ridges sweeping across 2 million acres from Pennsylvania through New Jersey and New York to Connecticut. These highlands, on which our own Litchfield and Berkshire Counties are directly situated, have been recognized by the USDA Forest Service as critical land and water resources of national significance, which are at risk through increasing pressure for development. Whereas other crucial watersheds and wildlife corridors are protected as part of state and federal parks or forest holdings, this mid-section of the Highland Corridor is especially vulnerable because of its proximity to heavily populated and urban areas.

Mr. Whiteford will provide an overview of the region, discuss specific strategies for protection, and cover important legislative initiatives pending in Congress. The talk is sponsored by the Coalition for Sound Growth, a Norfolk citizens group concerned with raising awareness and sparking public debate of issues related to growth and development.

Babysitting and refreshments will be provided, and all are welcome to attend the presentation, which is free of charge; for more info call 860-542-6929.
