Conservation Voters Endorse Willis and Roraback

The CT League of Conservation Voters has endorsed State Representative Roberta Willis, the Democratic candidate seeking re-election in the 64th House District, and State Senator Andrew Roraback, the Republican candidate seeking re-election in the 30th Senate District. Willis and Roraback join a select group of candidates from both parties and from all regions of the state who have been identified by the bipartisan League as the best environmental choices for election to the CT General Assembly on November 5.

CTLCV’s environmental scorecard, which is the record of important votes cast by lawmakers on environmental legislation each year, awarded Representative Willis a perfect 100% for both legislative sessions since her election to office in 2000. Senator Roraback also earned an impressive score of 90% during his first term in the State Senate. In deciding the endorsement, the League researched positions on issues and evaluated responses to an environmental questionnaire that was completed by all candidates competing for these two seats.

Willis was cited for her support of strong and even enforcement of existing environmental laws that could have avoided ill-conceived state projects like the Litchfield County Courthouse. Willis has also been working with groups like Scenic Hudson and the Housatonic Valley Association to address the highly controversial Greenport, NY cement plant that will greatly impact the district. If re-elected, she will continue the work she began as a freshman legislator to pass pesticide notification laws better protect human and environmental health.

Senator Roraback was commended by the League for his successful leadership in the recent session to strengthen and improve the CT Environmental Policy Act. He also introduced a bill to tackle the growing problem of invasive plants that are choking out our native plants and wildlife, and will continue this initiative next session. Both legislators consider the preservation of remaining farmland in their districts and across Connecticut to be critical to our state’s future.
