Maintaining the Mattatuck Trail
By Jeff O'Donnell, Bristol
Scott Whittaker and Mike Kabelka had many valid complaints regarding their hike on the Mattatuck Trail [Rediscovering the Connecticut Wilderness; published in three parts on October 4, October 11 and October 18]. This trail was neglected for years because the CT Forest & Parks Association, a nonprofit group of volunteer trail maintainers, could not find anyone to maintain some parts of the trail. I recently adopted the first 12 miles of the trail, and the trail is now in good shape. (I understand that Scott and Mike hiked the trail this past spring, before I started working on it.) I will also check some of the other parts of the trail where Scott and Mike had difficulties, and ensure that they are taken care of.
Anyone having difficulty on the blue-blazed trails should call our office at 860-346-2372, and we will correct the problem as soon as possible. I am planning some major relocations of some parts of the trail in the next few years to eliminate some of the long road walks, and these will be posted on our website, <ctwoodlands.org>.
Please call me at 860-584-8168 if you have comments on the Mattatuck Trail, or any other blue-blazed trails.
