Charles E. Youmans Memorial Fund Established

(L-R) Jay Youmans and Mrs. Betsy Youmans presented a check to JoAnn Briggs, who accepted the gift on behalf of the W.L. Gilbert Trust Corp. and The Gilbert School.

The Gilbert School Athletic Department will be the beneficiary of kindness shown by local golfers who turned out in great numbers in August to remember coach, teacher and friend Charlie Youmans, who was also an avid golfer.

Organized by Charlie’s son Jay with help from Gilbert’s former assistant headmaster Frank McCann, current athletic director Mike Gamari, friends Ray Kaufman and Vic Hladik, daughter Tina O’Neill and niece Kelley Smith, the tournament was a huge success, generating over $7,000. These monies have been added to the more than $3,000 in Youmans memorial gifts sent to the school over the past few months and will establish a $10,000 permanent fund to be known as the Charles E. Youmans Memorial Fund.

The yearly income from this fund will be directed to the school’s athletic department, where Mr. Youmans spent the majority of his 38-year Gilbert School career. Among many other accomplishments, he started the wrestling program at the school and was the assistant football coach for many years.

The Athletic Department seemed a natural for the Youmans family when considering an appropriate and meaningful way to remember their dad and husband. In making the presentation with her son Jay, Mrs. Youmans commented on the impact that her husband had on the students of The Gilbert School and how important the students were to him. It is their hope that the Coach Youmans Memorial Golf Tournament will become a yearly event and that more and more students will benefit from involvement in sports during their years at Gilbert. In addition to the creation of the Memorial Fund, monies have been given for the purchase of a new trophy case in Mr. Youmans’ memory.
