Torrington YMCA Celebrates National Family Week

During Thanksgiving week, November 24-30, the citizens of Torrington will join thousands of people across the United States in celebration of the 32nd annual National Family Week, a recognition of the connections citizens of Torrington and of cities nationwide have with their families and communities.

"National Family Week: Connections Count" embraces the premise that children live better lives when their families are strong; families are strong when they live in communities that connect them to economic opportunities, social networks and services. These connections include everyday access to high-quality transportation, employment opportunities, education and childcare—as well as positive relationships within and among families.

"Ordinary families are extraordinarily important to our communities and our country," says Rachel Harrel, Membership Director of Northwest YMCA. "When America's diverse families and children are healthy, our nation prospers. That's why we hope everyone will take time during National Family Week to honor the connections that support and strengthen families year-round. Let's recognize the value of families, as well as the importance of family values."

Sam Wiley, who was a teacher and administrator in Indianapolis, founded National Family Week in 1968. The Alliance for Children and Families, based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has directed National Family Week efforts for more than 30 years. The Alliance and its member organizations across the country, including Northwest YMCA, are coordinating activities on local and national levels to encourage people to celebrate their connections within the community and the family.

The Northwest YMCA Torrington Branch plans several special events to celebrate National Family Week. On Friday, November 29 three family swim times will be added to its schedule: from 9-10:30 a.m., from 1-2:30 p.m., and from 6-9:30 p.m. That evening we hold "Our Very Special National Family Week Family Night," with refreshments in the Northwest YMCA lobby from 6:30-8:30 p.m., family gym time and Kid's Gym from 6:30-8:30 p.m., and the family swim. Family night events are free to YMCA members and $3 per person (up to $15 per family) for non-members.

There will also be a Turkey Burner Family Walleyball Tournament, with prizes awarded to the top two families. Pre-registration is required by November 22; tournament cost is $15 for YMCA members and $20 for non-members. For details call the Torrington YMCA at 860-489-3133.
