Students and teachers from St. Francis of Assisi School spent Saturday, November 2 planting flower bulbs to help beautify Coe Park in downtown Torrington. Members of the student council, 6th grade teacher Mrs. Blake, and 8th grade teacher Mrs. Kraft worked diligently with Richard Calarcio, Torrington's new Superintendent of Parks and Recreation. Together they planted 500 daffodil and tulip bulbs. The project was organized by principal Jo-Anne Gauger, who wants her students to develop a sense of responsibility toward their community.

"Community service is an important part of our educational goals at St. Francis," says Mrs. Gauger, who points out that her school's efforts are part of a nationwide event called Make a Difference Day sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation and Newman's Own Products. Newman's Own, founded by actor-philanthropist Paul Newman, donates all after-tax profits from sales of its goods to charities. The event is one of the largest community service efforts in the nation; an estimated 2.2 million people participated last year. St Francis School intends to incorporate this annual event into its tradition of community service.
