COLLINSVILLE: The 14th annual Thanksgiving Dinner will be held at 12:30 p.m. at Collinsville Congregational Church, 7 South St. This is a community service sponsored by Focus on Canton for Farmington Valley residents who would otherwise be alone and would like company and a home-cooked meal. Rides will be provided, and meals will be delivered to shut-ins where needed. There is no charge for dinner, but a free-will offering will be accepted; reservations are requested by November 26. GOSHEN: Goshen Hospice celebrates its annual "Light Up a Life" tree lighting ceremony at 4:30 p.m. at the Old Town Hall at the rotary (Routes 4 & 63). The ceremony is an opportunity to honor the memories of loved ones. After the tree lighting, the holiday season will be ushered in with music and refreshments. Family and friends can dedicate a light on the holiday tree with a pledge by calling 491-4673.
LITCHFIELD: Mothers Against Drunk Driving of Litchfield County hold their annual vigil to celebrate the lives of those who have been killed or injured in an alcohol-related crash at 2 p.m. at St. Anthonys Church, 49 South St. This candlelight vigil of remembrance and hope is a poignant memorial to victims from all across Connecticut and the United States. Anyone wishing to attend to support the victims and their families, or anyone who wishes to have the name of their loved one read, should call the MADD office at 860-350-6233.
TORRINGTON: Northwestern CT AIDS Project commemorates World AIDS Day with a short ceremony at 6 p.m. on the steps of Torrington City Hall. The program, which is a demonstration of local commitment to fight against the AIDS pandemic and a show of support for those living with HIV disease, will include the musical talent of Wamogo High School singers Becky Craig and Jessie Dorsette. At the close of the program there will be a candlelight vigil and walk from City Hall to the NCAP office at 100 Migeon Ave., where participants will be invited to help hang ornaments commemorating those Litchfield County residents who have died from AIDS; warm refreshments will be served. GREAT BARRINGTON: South Berkshire Campaign for a Living Wage presents a community forum about the critical issues regarding a living wage at 7 p.m. at St. James Church, 352 Main St. The forum will include short presentations by Jen Kern, an organizer from the ACORN Living Wage Resource Center; Bill Dwight, a member of the Northampton City Council who helped create a living wage policy for that city; and Jill Hurst, an organizer and worker from the successful Boston Justice for Janitors campaign of the Service Employees International Union. Following their remarks there will be an extensive period for questions and discussion. The South Berkshire Campaign for a Living Wage is a newly-formed coalition of working people, artists, students, teachers, and small business owners committed to winning a living wage for workers in Berkshire County. GRANBY: Valley Brook Community Church presents a Live Nativity from 5-8 p.m. at Salmon Brook Park on Route 10. This representation of the manger scene of the birth of Jesus Christ uses real animals and actors. Visitors are welcome to walk through the life-size nativity, pet the animals, and ponder the meaning of the season. There will also be free refreshments, hot drinks and Christmas caroling, which visitors are invited to join. LITCHFIELD: League of Women Voters co-sponsors a workshop on Litchfields Vision Plan led by Planning and Zoning Commission members Katherine Davis and Victoria Claman at 9:30 a.m. The Planning and Zoning Commission has contacted the League of Women Voters, along with other civic organizations, boards and commissions, to review the towns Vision Plan to note whether or not particular recommendations have been completed, require an update, or are no longer relevant. By law, the Vision Plan must be updated every ten years. League members and the Litchfield community are invited to make their voices heard in this important process of planned stewardship of their hometown. The economic, cultural and environmental planning and zoning of Litchfield is a major challenge and one that demands every citizens attention.
