Recycle During the Holidays
Recycling during the holidays is extra important with the additional waste generated. Regional Refuse Disposal District #1, which serves Barkhamsted, New Hartford and Winchester, wishes to remind all residents that the transfer station is open on Wednesdays from 4-7 p.m., with no sticker required. Only recyclable items are accepted during these special hours.
Recycling is not only the environmentally correct thing to do, it also saves costly disposal fees. A fee of $57 per ton is charged at the Hartford refuse-to-energy plant to dispose of our waste. Recycled items are disposed of for no fee and some are revenue producers, such as steel ($22 per ton) and the mixture of junk mail, magazines, office paper, phone and soft cover books ($50 per ton). For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2001, the district spent nearly $750,000 of tax dollars for trash disposal.
Two items of particular interest during the holiday season are boxboard and wrapping paper. Boxboard is non-corrugated cardboard that most general merchandise comes in. Cereal and other food boxes, pasta, auto parts and similar packaging are examples of boxboard. In addition, residents should be aware that wrapping paper is not recyclable and should be disposed of with their household trash.
