Torrington Receives Grant for Housing Rehabilitation
The CT Dept. of Economic and Community Development (DECD) has awarded the City of Torrington a $500,000 Small Cities grant to continue Torrington’s city-wide housing rehabilitation program. The grant will provide money needed to upgrade approximately 25 residences, predominately located in the city’s urban Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy Area. Rehabilitating housing in this area will also improve the overall appearance of Torrington’s downtown commercial and government center.
DECD last provided Small Cities funds for the city’s housing rehabilitation program in 1997. This $500,000 grant will be used to rectify code violations, to address hazardous materials concerns, and to perform energy-saving measures. Torrington will also coordinate its housing rehabilitation program with social service providers, who will assist clients with a wide variety of issues.
The funds will be available some time in January or February; for more info call Laurence Wagner, the city’s Program Administrator for Small Cities funds, at 203-573-1188.
