Winter Art Classes at IS183
IS183, Art School of the Berkshires, is offering a full range of classes, workshops, art camps and intensives for all ages and abilities this winter. IS183's four studios—devoted to ceramics, painting and drawing, fiber arts, and young artists—will play host to a wide variety of artmaking opportunities for beginners, practicing artists, and seasoned professionals under the instruction of regionally and nationally acclaimed instructors.
IS183, formerly the Interlaken School of Art, is a community-based, not-for-profit art school dedicated to promoting the enriching and essential role of the artmaking process, the artist, and art in our individual and shared community lives through sustained engagement in the artmaking process, public discourse and art exhibition.
Classes for children begin the week of January 13 and include "Art Playgroup" with Karen Arp-Sandel for ages 3 and up on Tuesday mornings; "Terrific Tableware" with Paula Shalan, a ceramics class for ages 7-12 offered both Friday mornings and afternoons; and "Felting: Mittens and Hats" with Theresa May-O'Brien on Monday afternoons for ages 7-12.
Adult classes beginning the same week include daytime, evening and weekend classes. New ceramics classes this winter include "Handbuilt Pottery for Painters" with renowned local artist and ceramicist John French on Sunday afternoons; and "Introduction to Clay" with IS183's ceramics studio manager Elizabeth Daly on Wednesday evenings.
The painting and drawing department features a new Monday morning class, "Untraditional Etching: Exploring the Silicone Intaglio Process" with master printmaker Dale Bradley, who is writing a book on silicone intaglio; and "Thursday Morning Design Studio Image and Object" with Gary Joseph Cohen, an integrative-media artist and poet.
IS183's Fiber Arts Department features a class in "Story Blankets" with local favorite Susan Hardcastle on Wednesday mornings; and "Men and Women Knitting" with Matthew Mandel, who transitioned from surgical needles to knitting needles after retirement, on Wednesday nights.
In addition, IS183 offers a Life Drawing Open Studio every Monday from 6-9 p.m. beginning January 27, providing students and artists ongoing access to live models. Attendance is on a drop-in basis for $12 a session, or $50 for five sessions.
All classes are held in IS183's historic home in the village of Interlaken in Stockbridge. IS183 is located at 13 Willard Hill Road, just off of Route 183 via Trask Lane.
