Gilbert Class of ’57 Reunion
By Janet Stack, Winsted

(L-R) Bob Shopey, Janet Stack, Marlene Davis and Fran Schaller

The 45th reunion for the Gilbert Class of 1957 took place on Saturday, October 12. It seems impossible that 45 years have passed by already … why, it seems like only yesterday that we teenagers roamed the halls of Gilbert.

The Cornucopia in Torrington was where the event was held. The dance floor was festively decorated with a hundred colorful balloons, and groups of gold and blue balloons, the Gilbert school colors, were placed in accent areas. Class memorabilia was placed around the hall for the classmates to view. A large, framed picture of our 8th grade graduation class was donated to our collection by Lillian and Ray Chausse.

Everyone was so excited to see each other and get acquainted again. The reunion was attended by about 75 classmates and spouses. Some of the classmates traveled great distances—Gary LaFountain came from California, Carolee D. Salisbury from Florida, George Nero from Virginia, James Perkins from Tennessee, and John Benedict from New York. We appreciate all who made the long distance trip to make this event special.

A group photo was taken to remember this fine party. The classmates were given a booklet that contains the names, addresses, phone numbers, and some e-mail addresses of everyone who attended Gilbert from 1953 through 1957, along with a list of the deceased members of our class.

We danced to the music of Bob Gianotti of New Haven and Gwynne Griffin of Winsted.

One of the highlights of the evening was when the Class of 1957 made a donation to The Gilbert School with a check in the amount of $15,400, which will be given as a yearly scholarship to a deserving student. Gilbert School trustees were present to accept this check. This contribution was collected over the past five years through pledges and donations from the Class of 1957. A beautiful flower arrangement was given to Janet Hazzard Stack for her relentless work to reach the Class's scholarship goal.

The Class of 1957 wishes to thank everyone who worked on the committee—Marlene J. Davis, Joan A. Ritchie, Fran D. Schaller, Bob Shopey, Lillian and Ray Chausse, Lorraine P. Talbot, Yvonne D. Travaglin, Cecelia M. Langevin, Bruce Boyle and Janet H. Stack—and all the others who helped in making this a successful, fun-filled event.

The 50th is next … Wow … what can we come up with for this occasion? Surprise!!
