Music and Dance

Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, 166 Capitol Ave. in Hartford presents the PACO PENA FLAMENCO DANCE COMPANY on Friday, January 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Belding Theater. Paco Pena embodies both authenticity and innovation in flamenco. As guitarist, composer, dramatist, producer and artistic mentor, he has transformed perceptions of this archetypal Spanish art form. The Warner Theatre, 68 Main St. in Torrington presents Momix in "OPUS CACTUS" on Friday and Saturday, January 10-11 at 8 p.m. Momix and founder/ artistic director Moses Pendleton create a transcendent, witty and visually stunning tableau of the northern Sonoran Desert. The sense of magic is heightened by a combination of popular and Native American music, the projection of large-scale visual images and the use of extraordinary props that have been described as "other-worldly and gravity altering." Northwest Park Nature Center, 145 Lang Rd. in Windsor presents singer-songwriter KATE CALLAHAN on Saturday, January 11 at 7:30 p.m. Named "Best Solo Performer of 2002" by the Hartford Advocate, Kate has opened concerts for Judy Collins, Claudia Schmidt, Erica Wheeler, Priscilla Herdman and Bill Morrissey; in 2002, she performed for thousands of folk fans at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in the emerging artists showcase. Her skilled finger style guitar playing and lyrically provocative songs are reminiscent of the singer songwriters of the ‘60s. Percussionist/ vocalist Damon Honeycutt enriches the musical broth and joins Kate in the ancient practice of harmonic overtone singing. Seven Angels Theatre, located at Hamilton Park Pavilion on Plank Rd. in Waterbury presents "MESSHUGAH NUNS!" through February 2, with performances on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. and Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. This is the 5th show in the series created by Dan Goggin, which began with "Nunsense" in 1986. This time, the Little Sisters of Hoboken embark on a cruise to the Holy Land. Along the way, they're asked to fill in for the seasick cast of "Fiddler on the Roof." Hartford Stage, 50 Church St. in Hartford presents Sophocles’ classic tragedy "ELECTRA" from January 9 through February 9 with performances on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday at 7:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.; and selected weekday and weekend matinees. This gripping story of a daughter seeking revenge on the mother who betrayed her family will feature a multi-cultural cast, including the acclaimed Yugoslavian film actress Mirjana Jokovic in the title role and Carmen Roman as Queen Clytemnestra. The brand new production features design elements that reflect both the traditional Greek setting of the play and the stark modern aspects of war, grief and revenge found in the play. Art Exhibits

Norfolk Library, Route 44 in Norfolk showcases the illustrative paintings of Norfolk’s KINUKO CRAFT through the end of January. A major figure in contemporary American illustration, Kinuko will personally select paintings for this exhibit from her range of fantasy art, book jackets, poster designs and children’s books. The awards, clients and exhibits of Kinuko Craft are far too numerous to mention here, but suffice it to say that the Norfolk Library is proud and excited to present the work of this world-renowned artist. Pump House Gallery, 60 Elm St. (in the southeast corner of Bushnell Park on Pulaski Circle) in Hartford exhibits LIVING PLACES, featuring the art of sculptor Victor Pacheo and painter Dunja Pelto through January 31. Harwinton Public Library, 80 Bentley Dr. in Harwinton presents the paintings of Winsted artist JOAN MARCHELL through the end of February. Her subject matter consists of landscapes, flowers, still life studies and seascapes. Ms. Marchell has had numerous one-woman shows at various locations including the Norfolk Library, Northwestern CT Community College, and the Agora Gallery in Soho, New York. IS183 Gallery, 13 Willard Hill Rd. in Stockbridge presents its ANNUAL FACULTY SHOW through March 28. Featured will be smoke-fired ceramics from Paula Shalan; felted scarves by Janet Reich Elsbach; a rattan "pot belly urn" by Wendy Jensen; watercolors by Patricia Hogan; monoprints and collages by Karen Arp-Sandel; "Akua’ba’s Drum Song," a quilt by Jude Patoka; pastels by June Parker; and a piece entitled "Potential Apparatus II" created with ditto ink, paper and ceiling paint on canvas by Gary Joseph Cohen. Artwell Gallery, 19 Water St. in Torrington is ACCEPTING ARTWORK for its "New Works 2003" exhibition; submitted works must have been created in the past year. The exhibit is open to all who are members or wish to become members of Artwell. Works in all media are welcome, up to three per artist; two-dimensional works must be ready to hang. Litchfield Hills Audubon Society conducts its annual NATURE SLIDE AND PHOTO CONTEST on Monday, February 3 at the Litchfield Community Center, Route 202 in Litchfield following the business portion of its meeting, which begins at 7:30 p.m. The contest is open to LHAS members only; categories include winter scenes, wild birds, nature scenes, people enjoying nature, sunrises and sunsets, and many other categories. Sheffield Historical Society presents its annual "WHAT'S IT" NIGHT with Milton Barnum and Chris Coenen on Friday, January 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Room of Old Parish Church, on the green in Sheffield. For years now, Milton Barnum and Chris Coenen have challenged audiences to stump them with antique objects brought in from home. Participants are faced with an array of unidentified objects lying before them and a limited amount of time in which they must strive to uncover the correct name and function of the objects. Barnum and Coenen then lead the participants through the process of discovery. Can anyone uncover the secrets of each and every object? Search your closets, your attics and your barns for that special gizmo or gadget to puzzle the experts at this educational and always entertaining event. Stanley-Whitman House, 37 High St. in Farmington offers THE LINES ARE DRAWN, a themed living history tour of this historic house on Sunday, January 12; the first 45-minute tour of the day begins at 12:15 p.m., with tours starting every 30 minutes after that; the last tour departs at 3:15 p.m. Townspeople form a Committee of Inspection to enforce patriot activities, but not everyone agrees. Meet William Judd, chairman of this powerful committee, and Mathias Leaming, who must vote his conscience—even if it means losing everything. Northwest Conservation District, 1185 New Litchfield St. in Torrington offers a workshop on EROSION AND SEDIMENT CONTROL for land use commissioners and staff on Thursday, January 16 from 4-7 p.m. Bob Jontos of Land Tech Consultants, who helped develop the new CT Guidelines for Erosion and Sediment Control, will cover environmental problems of soil erosion; fast, effective methods for site plan review; and how to apply Sediment and Erosion measures to the plans you review. Keynote speaker will be Kathy Hopkins, maple specialist with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension; she will focus on "Quality Control in Maple Syrup Production." Watertown Art League presents a PAINTING WORKSHOP with Kevin Conklin on Saturday, January 25 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at 550 Gallery, 550 Main St. South in Bethlehem. Danbury artist Kevin Conklin studied art at Paier College of Art and Massachusetts College of Art. He has been a professional artist and illustrator since 1982, providing illustrations for numerous well-known Connecticut corporations, including American Express and SNET, His prints are sold in Ethan Allen stores nationwide, and he has received acclaim for his gallery shows. Conklin’s paintings reflect his spiritual connection with nature, and he gets his greatest inspiration from abstract patterns found in nature, which he re-creates using oil paints and oil pastels in vibrant colors. Learn to have confidence in finding your way. This workshop will cover basic compass work and map reading, and will combine the two skills which form the basis of orienteering. These skills will be tested during the field trip, a way-finding experience on White Memorial’s permanent orienteering course located in the Five Ponds area. Trips

Goshen Recreation Department offers a two-day CONNECTICUT CASINO CAPER on Sunday and Monday, February 9-10. The coach will leave Goshen on Sunday at 7:45 a.m., bound for Foxwoods Casino. Dinner and hotel accommodation will be at the Best Western Sovereign Hotel of Mystic; for those who wish more casino time, the hotel offers shuttle service for a nominal charge.
