Major Tuition Breaks Available at Out-of-State Colleges

Connecticut college-bound students whose major is not offered by a Connecticut state college may qualify for a substantial tuition break at out-of-state public colleges and universities through the New England Board of Higher Education’s Regional Student Program (RSP). Connecticut residents are eligible for the RSP tuition break when they enroll in approved programs offered by public campuses in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

At some public campuses, RSP students pay as little as half the tuition they would ordinarily pay as out-of-state students. This academic year, for example, a Connecticut resident enrolled through the RSP at the University of Rhode Island pays $5,796 in tuition instead of URI's out-of-state tuition of $13,334. Last academic year, nearly 1,200 participating Connecticut residents saved an average $6,000 each on their annual tuition bills, for a total one-year savings of more than $7 million.

The new 2003-04 Apple Book for Connecticut Residents, the RSP catalog, explains eligibility for the discount and lists approved programs. The catalog is available at high school guidance offices and libraries, city and town libraries, public college admissions offices, from NEBHE and online at <www.nebhe.org>.

Connecticut residents can choose from more than 300 degree programs—associate, bachelor’s and graduate—that are available with the RSP tuition break. For more info contact the Office of the Regional Student Program, New England Board of Higher Education, 45 Temple Place, Boston, MA 02111; phone 617-357-9620.
