Kardash Onnig's "New Tools for Being"
New Arts Gallery, 513 Maple St. in Litchfield will be presenting the first U.S. showing of Kardash Onnig's "New Tools for Being" on Saturday, January 25 from 3-8 p.m. This one-day installation, which includes both drawings and sculpture, will travel on to the Middle East and then to various countries around the world following this event.
For the past 30 years, Kardash's art has reflected a profound existential quest for crossing borders. He has lived and worked with various cultures, initiating a process of collaborative creativity: to observe and learn from the other with curiosity and a lightness of movement; to recognize one's own heritage as connecting tissue within the larger corpus of universality; to celebrate the other as both complement and elucidation of one's own significance; to become, ultimately, the other.
Kardash's "New Tools for Being" are three-dimensional mediums for the sharing of ideas, stories, experiences and fields of vision. Kardash's "Tools" are a new language for bridging political boundaries and cultural divides. With their defining metaphor of converging force fields, the Tools represent the artist's evolving understanding of quaternary synergism.
The Quaternary, or the Principle of Four, is a common symbol in cultures throughout the world. Whether manifested through the cross, medicine wheel, YHWH, Allh, khatchkar, svastikah (Sanskrit) or haiku, the Quaternary is about a concordance of the four elements, the four seasons, the four dimensions, the four beings.
This installation attempts to transcend the limitations of language and ideologies, and brings us directly into experience. It facilitates and directs us into an awareness of our three-dimensionality and connects us much in the same way that musical notes transcend language on a universal level.
