Creative Writing Workshops for Teens

Beginning the week of February 24, writer and teacher Betsy Selfo leads after-school creative writing workshops for teens at Artwell Gallery, 19 Water St. in downtown Torrington. Creative Writing for Teens will be offered on Mondays or Wednesdays for ages 14-18; and on Tuesdays for ages 11-13. Sessions run from 3:30-5 p.m. for 10 weeks.

These workshops are dedicated to promoting creativity and self-expression; participants will leave wanting to write more. If there is a story, poem, song, rant, rap, essay, journal entry, novel or play inside you, we’ll make it real. All will be encouraged to express themselves and be recognized for their own unique style.

Betsy Selfo first wrote the CYO newsletter for her church at age 13. Since then Ms. Selfo has been a professional business writer/ journalist for 25 years, and a master teacher/ mentor recognized for excellence in teaching by the CT Dept. of Education. She was awarded a writing scholarship and bachelor’s degree from Sarah Lawrence College and a master’s degree in Education from the University of Hartford. Most recently, the internationally recognized Amherst Writers and Artists certified Ms. Selfo as a writing workshop leader.

Ms. Selfo is a dynamic, creative teacher who has launched many students on writing careers. She self-published the work of her students in a book called The Girl Within. Ms. Selfo is currently an adjunct at Northwestern CT Community College.

Classes are limited to ten participants, so register early. Previous writing experience is not required, and there is no homework. The cost is $130 for 10 sessions; to register or for more info, call 860-485-0463.
