62nd Girl Scout Cookie Campaign Kicks Off

The Girl Scouts of Northwestern CT are conducting their 2003 Girl Scout Cookie Sale through February 2. This year's eight-variety line includes the favorite Thin Mint; Somoas; peanut butter Do-si-dos; shortbread Trefoil; peanut butter dipped in chocolate Tagalongs; shortbread with a rich fudge coating All Abouts; vanilla cookies with pecans and coconut, Ole' Ole'; and the crunchy macadamia nuts and white fudge chips confection, Aloha Chips.

This year over 2,000 girls from the 22-town Council area will be calling relatives, neighbors and friends to place their orders. The cookies will be delivered in mid-March. Besides being the #1 fundraiser for local Girl Scouts, the sale is their introduction to the world of business. They learn about the importance of teamwork, marketing and delivering a product, being responsible for money, and setting goals and making plans for their troop's share of the proceeds.

Girls this year will also participate in an original Council program, "Girl Scouts Dream—Reach for the Stars." This program encourages girls to identify and recognize female role models, within our communities and historically, who may lead them to have a life or career that makes a difference in other people’s lives.

The $3.50 spent to purchase a box of cookies is divided in this way: 23% covers the purchase of the cookies; 16% is used by the troops for their special activities and programs; and the remaining 61% is used for direct services to girls such as subsidizing special programs, training leaders, providing camperships, buying program equipment, and providing for the continual maintenance and repair of Camp Maria Pratt.

Girl Scouts between the ages of 5-17 will benefit directly from community support of the Cookie Sale. Girl Scout cookies were first baked in 1934, with the Girl Scout Council of Northwestern CT first selling in 1941. Originally, Girl Scouts used to bake the cookies at home. Today, the cookie sale is the world's largest bake sale. All cookies are made with top quality ingredients and without preservatives.

Individuals who would like to purchase cookies from a local Girl Scout, but are not contacted, may call the Girl Scout Council of Northwestern CT office at 860-482-4495.
