Introduction to Forensic Science at NCCC
Sergeant Michael R. Emanuel Jr. of the Torrington Police Department will be teaching a course entitled "Introduction to Forensic Science" during the spring term at Northwestern CT Community College in Winsted. Sergeant Emanuel, a graduate of NCCC’s Criminal Justice Program, describes his course as "an introduction to the field of forensics with a focus on locating and processing physical evidence collected from a crime scene." The course includes directions on how to collect, process and analyze physical evidence such as hairs, fibers, trace evidence, fingerprints, explosives, questioned documents, gunshot residue, firearms, tool marks and serum.
Mr. Emanuel, who also holds a graduate degree in Forensic Science from the University of New Haven, hopes that this course will help future law enforcement officers become more aware of the importance of physical evidence and enhance their ability to process evidence from crime scenes. The emphasis in this course will be on practical applications and hands-on learning. Students will be exposed to the latest physical and chemical testing methods, showing each method's value in a variety of situations.
