"Democrat Joe" Takes a Vacation
By L.A. Steel
"Democrat Joe" Lieberman has announced the beginning of his biennial vacation. For those who might remember, he did the same in 2000 when running for Vice President, as he and his good buddy Al hit the road in their campaign for the White House. Many Connecticut residents well remember that "Democrat Joe" was also running for his senatorial seat at the same time, virtually unopposed by the best Republican senatorial candidate available to Connecticut voters—the now incarcerated former mayor of Waterbury turned FBI informant, Phil Giordano. In hindsight, it was a good thing that "Democrat Joe" won the election regardless of how little effort or money he put into his senatorial campaign. "Oh well," as "Republican Ron" would say.
"Democrat Joe" is soon to be leaving Washington, DC and Connecticut for his whirlwind tour of the country before Congress changes the campaign financing laws. Joe is one of the leading Democratic fundraisers and must be certain that he fills his campaign coffers even though his chances for nomination are slim to none. Given recent Democratic history—and especially Joe’s—he’ll probably run until the primaries, concede to Kerry or some other more legitimate Democrat, continue to collect his senatorial salary and keep whatever funds he received from his short campaign.
Once he returns home to Connecticut or DC, he will whine to the media for the next two years about how hard he will have to work as a real senator until 2006. Then Connecticut voters can give "Democrat Joe" what he and we will so desperately need: Joe Lieberman’s permanent vacation from American politics.
