Patriotic Holidays
By Ursula B.G. Kilner, Salisbury
Before the year gets any older, I think it would be appropriate to list the patriotic holidays in 2003 as recognized by the Non Commissioned Officers Association, which represents members in the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard.
The patriotic holidays so recognized are: National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans—Friday, February 14; Armed Forces Day—Saturday, May 17; Memorial Day—Monday, May 26 (observed) and Friday, May 30 (traditional); Flag Day—Saturday, June 14; Independence Day—Friday, July 4; Korean War Armistice—Sunday, July 27 (the commemorative period for the 50th Anniversary of the Korean War is 2000-03); POW/ MIA Recognition Day—Sunday, September 21; Veterans Day—Tuesday, November 11; and Pearl Harbor Day—Sunday, December 7.
These are the official days of remembrance sent to me by the Non Commissioned Officers Association. If you have any questions or suggestions, the organization has a toll-free number for inquiries; call 800-662-2620. You can also find the organization on the Internet at <www.ncoausa.org>.
With so many holidays being shifted around to give "the working man" three-day weekends, I think it is important that we remember the real dates. Thus far the Fourth of July has stayed the same! When I was a little girl, I remember Decoration Day (now Memorial Day) and seeing the very withered old men from the Civil War. It brings history home to me to have that memory.
