St. Francis Celebrates Catholic Schools Week
The students at St. Francis of Assisi School in Torrington have been busy preparing for Catholic Schools Week, which will take place January 27-31. They have decorated the halls with artwork on the theme of Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, and each grade has prepared book projects for display.
Thanks to the Student Council's hard work raising monies through bake sales, raffles and other fundraisers, each day of the week will feature a variety of fun and educational activities and special events. On Monday, the students will welcome Hope Douglas from the Wind Over Wings wildlife rehabilitation center. She will teach the children about birds of prey and will introduce them to some live specimens. That same day, the children will be involved in multi-grade art projects, brining older and younger students together in a communal activity.
Tuesday will include a mass at 8 a.m. followed by an open house for prospective students and their families at 9 a.m. A Student Council talent show will take place in the afternoon. Wednesday will feature instruction in dance movement in the gymnasium as well as talks by four eighth-grade students who have been at St. Francis since kindergarten. They will speak about what their Catholic school education has meant to them. The afternoon will be active, with volleyball games between grades and between faculty and students.
Thursday's schedule includes a special presentation on chemistry from Mobile Productions, an event sure to stir imaginations. The week ends with Teacher Appreciation Day (celebrated nationwide), winter wonderland games, and a sports quiz bowl.
Catholic Schools Week will be an eventful one at St. Francis. The school extends a warm welcome to prospective students and others who wish to celebrate with them. For specific event times and other information, please call 489-4177.
Since 1974, the National Catholic Educational Association and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops have sponsored this annual nationwide celebration of Catholic schools. The sponsors celebrate the important role that Catholic schools play in providing a values-added education for America's youth. The purpose of Catholic Schools Week is to build community awareness of, and involvement in, Catholic schools throughout the country. This year's slogan is "Catholic Schools—Making a world of difference."
