Kent Chocolate Fest Gathers Steam

The Community House on North Main St. in Kent will be the "hot spot" in town on Wednesday, February 12. Residents and visitors of all ages will gather there for the 8th annual Chocolate Fest to benefit the town's scholarship fund. The popular event, the perfect cure for winter blues and blahs, starts promptly at 3:15 p.m. (Construction work at Kent Center School has made the move to a new location necessary.)

Chocolate truffles and mousses, chocolate turtles and mice, chocolate-covered strawberries and pretzels, Mississippi mud bars, snowballs, fudges, meringues and other favorites will be laid out on large tables. Each person who purchases a plate for $5 selects sweet things which can be eaten on site or wrapped. "Goodies to Go" or pre-wrapped plates are also available for those seeking to make a more speedy exit.

Hedy Kinney, president of the Kent Center School Scholarship Fund and co-chairman of the Chocolate Fest, became involved as a volunteer to continue the work of the fund's founders. "The people who started the scholarship fund in 1961 had a wonderful sense of community and a commitment to helping young people from Kent get a higher education," she reflected. "Our family was so grateful for the help that our own children, Heather and Jack Jr., received that we stepped in to help."

Advance tickets for Chocolate Fest will be available at Backcountry Outfitters and Toys Galore. Volunteers will also sell tickets in front of Davis IGA on Saturdays, February 1 and February 8; and at the Kent Market on Sundays, February 2 and February 9. "People sometimes buy the tickets because they feel sorry for us standing outside in the coldest winter weather," ticket sales coordinator Carolyn Echols commented with a laugh.

Home-baked or prepared contributions are welcomed and can be dropped off at the Community House anytime after 8 a.m. on February 12. The snow date for the Chocolate Fest is February 13. For more info call Ms. Kinney during the day at 860-927-1040, or in the evening at 860-927-3413.
