Playwriting Competition for Teens
Hartford Stage is currently asking teenagers to send in a summary of a play with the theme of "Culture Clash." Eight ideas will be selected, and these writers will have the chance to develop their work with the aid of acclaimed playwright Edwin Sanchez. The resulting ten-minute plays will be performed by professional actors as part of Hartford Stage's "Brand: NEW" Festival of New Works.
Playwright Edwin Sanchez's interest in Write On! stems from the need for new writers. He states: "We need to encourage young people to write. We need to make sure they know that they can write, that it's not something that is beyond them, it's not something that only other people do." Elaine Stancliffe, parent of one of the 2002 Write On! winners and principal of Odyssey Community School, writes: "Hartford Stage provides an incredible experience for the young authors in the Write On! competition. They receive recognition and encouragement—important gifts for teenagers who are trying to figure out who they are and how they fit in … I hope it is the beginning of a tradition that will continue in future years to assist more and more aspiring young writers."
Teenagers can send their idea/ synopsis for the Write On! Playwriting Competition by March 14 via the mail to: Hartford Stage Education Department, 50 Church St., Hartford, CT 06103; by fax to 860-525-4420 (please attention your fax to the Education Department); or via email to <education@hartfordstage.org>. Be certain your submission includes your name, address and phone number.
