WINSTED: Winchester Board of Education’s Finance Committee invites the public to participate in a focus group on the proposed education budget for 2003-04 at 7 p.m. in the Media Center at Pearson School. Decisions will soon be made regarding the budget; share your thoughts about what is important and advocate for programs you believe are essential for the town’s children.

Saturday, February 1

BANTAM: Veteran of the Month services will be conducted at 10 a.m. by American Legion Tyler-Seward-Kubish Post 44 at the All Wars Memorial on Route 202. The flag of the January honoree, Civil War Army veteran Andrew McGurk, will be retired and WWII Major Robert Eastman will be honored as the February Veteran of the Month. Following the services, a tribute will be offered at the Bantam Borough Hall for the Four Chaplains who gave their lives on the transport "Dorchester" when it was torpedoed on February 3, 1943 off the coast of Greenland. LITCHFIELD: Community Center activities—table tennis club for ages 10-16 (call 567-8302 to register) from 9 a.m.-noon; Warner Theatre drama group from 1-4 p.m.; Community Pasta Dinner and Dance featuring live band "Spaghetti Cake" ($10 adults, $5 kids) from 5-8 p.m.

TORRINGTON: Concordia Lodge #20 Sons of Italy, 34 Center St. holds early bingo at 1 p.m. and regular bingo at 2 p.m., with progressive jackpot and refreshments. Doors open at 11 a.m.

TORRINGTON: United Congregational Church, 1622 Torringford St. (Route 183) hosts a Roast Pork Dinner with seatings at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Menu includes roast pork, mashed potatoes, peas, pickled beets, rolls homemade pie and beverage. Cost is $9.50 adults, $4.75 children (under 12); for reservations call 482-6981. The church is handicapped accessible.

 

Sunday, February 2

LITCHFIELD: Wisdom House, 229 East Litchfield Rd. presents a Healing Service with Nigel Mumford at 6 p.m. Nigel Mumford is director of the Oratory of the Little Way in Gaylordsville and the author of "Hand to Hand: From Combat to Healing," a summary of his personal journey from a Royal Marine commando to a lay minister of healing. The service will offer an opportunity to gather with others to pray for healing of body, mind and spirit. There will be time for reflection, scripture, reading, personal prayer, and laying on of hands; the service will be followed by a reception. Suggested donation is $5; reservations are required. GOSHEN: The Town of Goshen holds an informational meeting regarding the proposed purchase of property at the southwest corner of Routes 4 & 63 (the former location of the tractor business) at 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Goshen Center School. All Goshen residents are urged to attend.

GREAT BARRINGTON: Claire Teague Senior Center activities—exercise with Theresa Decker ($3) at 9:30 a.m.; tap dancing ($5) at 11 a.m.; art class at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

LITCHFIELD: Community Center activities—yoga with Elin Larson ($7) at 9 a.m.; movie "Changing Lanes" at 1 p.m.; Weight Watchers meeting at 4:30 p.m.; Litchfield Hills Audubon Society meeting at 6:30 p.m.; French refresher course from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

TORRINGTON: Torrington Woman’s Club meets at 2 p.m. at Center Congregational Church. The program will be the Norwestones Barbershop Singers’ Half-Pint Quartet. Anyone interested in attending the meeting may call 860-489-6189.

WINSTED: Winchester Board of Education conducts a focus group for the general public on the hiring of a new Superintendent of Schools at 7 p.m. in the media Center at Pearson Middle School. Feedback is sought on the qualities and characteristics desired in our Superintendent of Schools. The focus group will be conducted by Dr. George Goens and Dr. Louis Esparo, consultants for the Board of Education.

 

Tuesday, February 4

CANTON: Canton Newcomer’s Club invites the public (including children) to a welcome coffee from 9-11 a.m. in the Multipurpose Room at the Community Center, 40 Dyer Ave. The club, which has been welcoming residents of Canton and surrounding towns for 27 years, offers varied monthly activities for women, couples and children. BRISTOL: The Mothers of Multiples of Greater Bristol meet at 7:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 31 Maple St. This meeting will be a Craft Night; a general meeting will be held first, and then the group will make picture frames for photographs. There will be hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. This club is a support group for mothers of twins, triplets and higher order multiples; new members are always welcome. There will be a soup luncheon; members should bring their own place settings. Immediately following the business meeting at 1 p.m., a program will be presented by Carol Lemmon of the CT Agricultural Extension Center in New Haven; the subject will be "Pollinators in Peril."
