Clever Budget Cutting by Rowland

By Lloyd T. Shanley, Jr., Harwinton

Governor John Rowland has cleverly made the cuts within his proposed state budget so cruel and unpalatable that the legislature, to best serve the people, will be forced to take the blame for the inevitable tax increases. This of course will leave the governor smelling like a rose, for did he not in a most heroic manner "fight to cut expenses"? Then John will be able to point out that it was not the overspending of his regime during his time in office, but rather all those "liberal spendthrift" Democrats in the legislature who are to blame!

A case in point: Has the governor ever truly explained how and why he and his cohorts allowed that illegal loan of more than $200 million to be made to the Enron folks? Of course John was very busy at the time and didn't know that the transaction was taking place! Now we learn that the $200 million that went down the drain is to be paid back by the people of the municipalities that participate in the use of the CRRA facility, guaranteeing another boost in local property taxes.
