Free Children's Bereavement Group Scheduled

A Children's Bereavement Group (for ages 5-12) will begin on Tuesday, February 11 and will meet each Tuesday from 4:30-6 p.m. for eight consecutive weeks at the Torrington office of Visiting Nurse Services of Connecticut, 62 Commercial Boulevard. The support group, co-sponsored by the Hospice at Home program of Visiting Nurse Services of Connecticut, Inc. and the Friends of Hospice, is designed to help children who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling, grandparent, relative or friend.

"This program provides an opportunity for kids to share their feelings about the death of a loved one with other children who have also experienced a loss. Knowing that they are not alone with these feelings helps them through the grieving process," said Tina Bernacki, RN, Hospice at Home coordinator.

Ruth Ellen Griffin, who has master’s degrees in both education and dance movement therapy, is the group facilitator. Ms. Griffin has served as creative arts therapist with the Hospice at Home program and has been trained as a play therapist. "Through storytelling, art, movement and play, the children express their feelings and share their memories. The group helps them process their grief, and the children find support from the people around them," Griffin commented.

There is no charge for participation; the group is funded by a grant from Friends of Hospice, Inc. Pre-registration is necessary as the size of the group is limited; for more info call Tina Bernacki at 860-482-6419. For more info on VNS of CT, visit <www.vnsct.com>.
