Albert Marshall to Speak on History of Canaan
On Tuesday, February 11 at 2 p.m., Albert Marshall will give a talk on his work on a history of Canaan. This life-long resident of Canaan will speak to the Salisbury Arsenal Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution in the Community Room of Noble Horizons on Cobble Rd. in Salisbury.
Albert, who is a renowned expert on toys, also has a deep interest in Canaan and how it has changed in his lifetime. It is too bad that every town historian doesn't take photographs of at least the main street of each town every year to keep a pictorial record of how much just the main street changes from year to year. Albert Marshall's memory is very sharp, and he recalls when the main street in Canaan had towering elms—now all victims of Dutch elm disease. His store, which was across from the Post Office, used to look at the lawn of the Roraback house on the corner of Main and Church Streets. That store now sells collectibles and antiques and the lawn across the road is the Post Office, with a parking lot next to the road. The Roraback house on the corner is still there, but it is now a law office. Without someone like Albert Marshall, who has an encyclopedic mind, we would forget all the changes—even ones in the past few years.
Albert Marshall is writing a history of Canaan as he has lived it. Everyone is welcome to attend the program and bring questions about things that have interested or puzzled them about Canaan. Unfortunately Albert Marshall's history is not yet in print, but we will get a preview. Following the program, refreshments will be served by members of the Salisbury Arsenal Chapter; everything is free and open to the public.
