Word Power State Championship Results
Sixty-one students from around Connecticut, all finalists in their schools' preliminary rounds, competed in the state finals of the Reader's Digest Word Power Challenge on January 21. The Girl Scout Council of Northwestern CT organized the event, which was held at Torrington's UConn campus.
At the State Championship, students competed in a preliminary round, with ten students advancing to the final competition. WFSB Channel 3 weather forecaster Scot Haney served as the official "Quiz Master." Emerging as the State Champion was Andrew Goebel from Fairfield, an 8th grader from Holy Family School; in second place was Korey Johnson, an 8th grader at Torrington Middle School; and third place honors went to Connor Hall of Danbury, a 6th grade student at St. Gregory the Great School.
As Connecticut State Champ, Andrew Goebel will compete in the national championship at Colonial Williamsburg in March. Al Roker of NBC's Today Show will serve as the national "Quiz Master." First prize at the national level is a $25,000 college scholarship.
The Girl Scouts had 30 volunteers organizing the event to make the day run smoothly for students, parents and school administrators in attendance.
