"The World We Build" at Canton Public Library

In a new twist on the book club phenomenon, a group of children and adults will gather during the month of March to discuss eight children’s books which address issues of ecology. Canton Public Library, 40 Dyer Ave. in Canton will host "The World We Build," a family book discussion program on ecology. Children ages 6-9, accompanied by a parent or caregiver, will read and discuss children’s literature that expresses an appreciation and concern for all aspects of nature. The collection of literature, which includes fantasy, realistic fiction and nonfiction, provides an opportunity for participants to discuss the challenges and rewards of protecting the environment.

The discussions will be led by professional storyteller and educational consultant Ellie Toy. As a storyteller, Ms. Toy captivates her audiences by helping them create pictures using their own imaginations so that they "see" the story. As a discussion leader, no doubt some of the same storytelling skills will enable her group to experience the stories more vividly and appreciate the issues with new eyes.

The first discussion, on Monday, March 3 from 4-5 p.m., is entitled "Every Little Thing" and is based on Brother Eagle, Sister Sky by Susan Jeffers and The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. On Monday, March 10, the topic will be "The Rainforest and Protecting Nature," using the titles The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry and A Walk in the Rainforest by Kristen Joy Pratt. On Monday, March 17, using the books Something from Nothing by Phoebe Gilman and Earth Day by Linda Lowery, the topic will be "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle." The final session on March 24, entitled "Change," will use Just a Dream by Chris Van Allsburg and Letting Swift River Go by Jane Yolen.

The program, which is free and open to the public, is made possible by a generous grant from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving and by the co-sponsorship of Friends of the Canton Public Library. Registration is required; both child and adult must attend all four sessions. Participants will be able to pick up the books prior to the first meeting. For more info call 860-693-5800.
