Family Night at Canton Public Library

Need a break from the barrage of television news warning of heightened security alerts, escalating budget deficits, and yet another mammoth snowstorm? Family Night at Canton Public Library is just the thing you’re looking for. On Friday, February 28 from 6-9 p.m., you can relax with a neighborly crowd who will gather to have some fun and to mark the last day of the week and the last day of a short but hard winter month.

Now in its third year, Family Night seems a throwback to earlier and simpler times. It’s an affair that reminds us all what small town living is all about, with a cozy, casual and friendly atmosphere that is welcoming to all ages, from infants to grandparents.

For the youngest and the young at heart there will be a story time, with Children’s Librarian Cheryl Donahue reading cozy bedtime stories. To get everyone in a comfortable, cozy mood, we invite families to bring along their coziest, funkiest slippers. And if yours are the evening’s best slippers, you’ll win a prize.

Magical Matt, who during the day is a student at Simsbury High School, will be entertaining with his magic tricks and his balloon animals.

For the teen crowd, the evening’s headliner will be Strider by Day, a band made up of three Canton High School freshmen: Sam Diters on drums, Dan Podesla on guitar, and Andre Szychowski on bass and vocals. The band, which describes its music as rock ‘n roll, has been together for three years and has appeared in a number of Farmington Valley venues. They will be performing "covers" as well as some of their original music, which they write collectively. One of their influences is an obscure 1980s rock ‘n roll band called Operation Ivy.

In keeping with Family Night’s traditions, the Girl Scouts will be selling baked goods. The evening promises to be an enjoyable time for all, with home-grown talent, home-baked goods, and the opportunity to put February behind us.

Canton Public Library is located at 40 Dyer Ave. in Canton; for more info call 860-693-5800.
