Bi-Regional Shabbaton in Pittsfield
The Empire and New England regions of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism join together for a Shabbaton at Congregation Knesset Israel in Pittsfield; the event begins on Friday afternoon, March 28, and extends through Sunday afternoon, March 30. Limud (learning) sessions will be held throughout the event, featuring study groups led by Rabbi Lynn Liberman, spiritual leader of Knesset Israel, and Serene Victor, National Synagogue Education Consultant for the United Synagogue.
Judy Yudof, USCJ International President, will deliver a keynote address on Friday evening. Ms. Yudof notes that "in addition to providing a stimulating environment for integrating prayer, study and socializing, these regional gatherings afford me an opportunity to have some meaningful interaction with our membership."
The Kabbalat Shabbat/ Ma'ariv service will be led by David Srebnick, who frequently serves as a cantorial soloist for area congregations. According to Mr. Srebnick, he will conduct the service "with a touch of Carlebach," encouraging congregants to join him in song. Prior to the Shabbaton, registrants will receive a CD of Shabbat and Pesah songs and melodies, prepared especially for the event.
The Saturday morning study group will focus on the David Moss Haggadah, providing participants with an opportunity to discuss the artistic, historical and theological merits of the work, while afternoon study will feature "Three New Twists for Your Pesah Seder." Both groups will be led by Serene Victor.
Entertainment will be provided Saturday night by the Tzamarot Dance Troupe, a high school performing dance ensemble from Temple Israel in Albany. The Shabbaton will end at noon on Sunday, preceded by a display of Judaica from the synagogue's gift shop as well as from a Judaica shop in Lenox.
Accommodations for convention participants will be provided by the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Pittsfield. To register or for more info, call New England Region USCJ at 617-964-8210.
