Joan Johnsen Joins North East Community Center

Joan Johnsen has joined the North East Community Center (NECC) as Program Director. She is responsible for overseeing the various programs at the Center and for directly running specific NECC programs.

Before her position at NECC, Johnsen led the Eye Crisis Services’ Critical Hours Program for middle school youth in Fallbrook, CA. She created the program, saw it through the grant application stage to implementation, and ran it for four years. This after-school program served a rural community’s children (ages 11-15) and provided homework help, conflict resolution skills, recreation and community service projects, as well as mentoring by Americorps members.

Johnson has also worked for the Domestic Violence Component of the Eye Crisis and Counseling Services, and is trained in prevention strategies concerning substance abuse and violence. She also served as chairperson of Fallbrook’s Prevention Coalition, which is a collaborative of educators, law enforcement, businesses and community leaders dedicated to eliminating substance abuse. Johnsen is a graduate of California State University with a degree in Sociology. She lives with her husband and three sons in nearby Canaan.

"I am eager for more people to participate in activities at the Center and volunteer here," states Johnsen. "I love to coordinate programs that involve the whole community—the Center, residents of all ages, businesses, artists, the schools, and other community institutions. It is very exciting to me. I hope, as I get to know people throughout Millerton, that they will let me know what they would like to have happen at NECC."

NECC hosts programs for young children and their parents, for children and teens, and for older community members. Some of these programs are Music Together, karate, various exercise programs, a drama club, writing workshop, and services such as the Care Car transport for the elderly and Extra Helpings Food Cooperative. In addition, NECC hosts a summer day camp, and makes its space available to community organizations for meetings.

North East Community Center is located on South Center St. in Millerton. For more info call 518-789-4259.
