Community Health Fair at Noble Horizons

HealthWise 2003, a family community health fair that will feature free tests and screenings plus a wide variety of demonstrations and presentations on healthy lifestyles, will be held at Noble Horizons in Salisbury on Saturday, March 1 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. On-site child care will be provided by the Housatonic Day Care Center so that parents may take full advantage of the health fair.

Area health professionals have volunteered their time and expertise to offer free hearing, vision, bone density, balance and body mass tests as well as oral screenings and podiatric checks. Skin damage evaluations, breast health education, and demonstrations of the Heimlich maneuver, massage, Pilates, Tai Chi, and the tango will be offered. Attendees are invited to bring their prescription medications for a private consultation with a pharmacist.

Blood tests available include cholesterol, hemoglobin, lipid profile, and fasting blood sugar. Those planning on being tested for cholesterol, lipid profile or blood sugar must fast for 8-12 hours prior to the test. Healthy snacks will be provided after the blood draw for those having these tests. Anyone who would like more info about preparing for the tests may call Kathy Bartles, Noble Horizons Staff Educator, at 860-435-9851, ext 166; or Jim Hutchison, Sharon Hospital Community Outreach Program Coordinator, at 860-364-1637.

Presentations are scheduled for Noble's Life Long Learning Center, beginning at 10 a.m. with "Bioterrorism and Smallpox" by Dr. Eugene Chin; followed by "Smoking Cessation" by LinCare at 11 a.m.; "Preventing Health Injuries" by Sharon Hospital Rehab at noon; "Continence Management" with Martha Klay, APRN at 1 p.m.; and "Nutrition" with Cindy Connor at 2 p.m.

In addition, a number of community outreach organizations will offer information about their services. All tests, screenings, and other programs at HealthWise 2003 are available on a first come, first serve basis and completely free of charge. HealthWise 2003 is sponsored by Noble Horizons and Sharon Hospital, with special thanks to PharMerica, which is covering lab fees.

Noble Horizons is located at 17 Cobble Rd. in Salisbury, which is accessible from either Route 44 or Route 41, approximately 1/2 mile from the town center. For more info call Noble Horizons Director of Development Joy Martorell at 860-435-9851, ext 188.
